County Attorney Wasting Money

Good Morning Everyone,
One thing we promised several months ago when we started this page, was to hold elected officials accountable for decisions that were made against the will of the voters. Our goal is to stop the behind-closed-door deals and expose the wrongdoings and save taxpayer money. "We the people" mean something to us.

So last week we had a meeting, which we posted about, with our new Cheyenne County Assessor and the independent assessor that our county has used for years to equalize and bring about independent assessments in our county. We came to an agreement on the assessment and the use of an independent assessor from Lincoln, and we thought everything was going to be fine. We were going to be able to drop our 2 lawsuits against the county and save the people of Cheyenne the wasted money of a court battle. There was going to be an independent assessment.
We have been notified that our County Attorney Paul Schaub doesn't see it that way. He wants “HIS” own private assessor to look at our building so he can determine whether he will move forward with the new independent assessment that the county has already paid for. Wow! Paul Schaub is using the power of our County Attorney's office in an attempt to intimidate us. We have been told he does this from time to time to other people. Paul Schaub will determine if an assessment is correct and not our elected County Assessor! Does that seem logical or biased? Many questions!

So, as citizens of Cheyenne County, we pay for the assessments of property to the assessor's office. Then, we pay more money for independent assessments to be done so that everything is nonpartial and free from bias. Now, we are also paying for more assessments by our County Attorney who by no means is nonpartial and nonbias, when it comes to our page and business. Oh, and he has no assessment training.
Last year, our property was assessed 3 times because our other assessor didn't like us exercising our 4th amendment rights and not letting her inside our property, which she insisted needed to be done. It is not required by any government and it is everyone's constitutional right to refuse to allow assessors into their property. Our last assessor went against the independent assessment of our building which we had accepted. We overwhelmingly replaced that assessor as voters with someone who supports 4th amendment rights. This year our new assessor re-evaluated our property. Our assessor then hired an independent assessment which was done by the same company that the county and previous assessor have used for years. This was to maintain a nonbias, impartial assessment. Makes sense, we agreed with it. Our assessor used the same company approved in the past by our County Attorney Paul Schaub. Now, because it is us, our County Attorney Paul Schaub is dragging this out, making the people of Cheyenne County pay for yet another assessment of our property, by his own assessor, and wasting even more taxpayer money. This is NOT nonbias. This costs ALL taxpayers. We can't pay to have our roads cleared of snow because our County Attorney is wasting more money on yet more assessments.

Here are the questions. Why does County Attorney Paul Schaub not believe the assessment that is performed by an independent assessor which the county has used for many years? This same company he has used for years? Is he biased? The “BIG” question is, does this now invalidate all assessments in this County because the County Attorney has now challenged the validity of assessments conducted by this independent assessor? This is an interesting question. How can he logically argue on one hand that the independent assessment company is correct in this instance and then not in our case? Obvious bias and he is using the office of County Attorney to intimidate us.
We overwhelmingly elected a new assessor in November of last year. She is reviewing many assessments for fairness. This assessor has done the proper thing in seeking an independent appraisal from a company the county has used for years. Keep it nonpartial and nonbias. So now, our County Attorney Paul Schaub stops that and wants to continue the battle at everyone's expense. This is the same County Attorney that got a new $322,000 office this year while we got a tax increase.

This summer, our court cases will be heard in Lincoln. Our assessor and the independent assessor will come to defend the assessments they did, which we agree with, and which is the job we pay them for. Our County Attorney Paul Schaub will go argue against our County Assessor and us in an attempt to have his own way. Wasted money. Our County Attorney will end up arguing against our County Assessor on an assessment. Does that make ANY logical sense?

There is so much waste in this County and City. There are officials who bully people. We have seen it. We have many documented stories. This will stop. We will go to court. Then, we will RECALL all elected officials who seek their own personal power to waste money and bully the voters. This will happen. People will be treated fairly here. We will continue the fight for our rights.
