Back in January 2023 we discussed the use of lodging tax dollars; how they were collected, what they support, and how they were distributed. (Lodging Tax 101). We visited with Kendra Mitchell, director of tourism, in the visitors center about how her budget is funded by lodging tax and some of the many things that are done through the visitors center. We learned a great deal from Kendra, and got some great ideas.
Recently, several members of the Farmer's Market group were discussing ideas for promoting the Farmer's Market in Hickory Square this summer. Through the conversation, we realized Kendra's budget could help with advertising and promotion of Farmer's Market. We reached out and asked what level of funding would be possible in this application. We were able to review the application, and contact the City of Sidney. An application was submitted to the county for funding for banners, color flyers, and social media ads.
The application for the funding had to be submitted by a government entity or a non-profit organization. We contacted Lori Borchert, the city clerk, and she submitted the application to Kendra to present to the county commissioners. Kendra presented the application to the commissioners on March 20th. The application for funds of $1845 was approved by the commissioners.
These funds will purchase a banner to hang over at the park across from Sonny's, color flyers to place at the hotels and around town, and fund social media advertising.
We want to give a big thanks to Lori, Kendra, and the commissioners for applying, presenting, and approving this grant to help promote a small business event. Many folks have come to enjoy the Farmer's Market; we also discovered many folks were unaware of the event happening. This is another great local event that can grow with community support and participation.
The Farmer's Market is the Last Saturday in June to the Last Saturday in September. 8AM to 12 NOON.
